Ethiopia Participating in BRICS Population Matters Meeting

This is a meeting of officials and experts from the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to discuss and cooperate on population-related issues of mutual concern. Ethiopia is participating in this meeting as an observer, along with other new members of BRICS.

The meeting is taking place in Durban, South Africa, from September 12 to 15, 2023. The purpose of the meeting is to advance the implementation of the Agenda for BRICS Cooperation on Population Matters for the period 2015-2020, which was adopted during the inaugural meeting of ministers responsible for population matters in Brasilia, Brazil, in February 2015.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the meeting include:

– Population dynamics and sustainable development
– Population ageing and social protection
– Migration and urbanization
– Gender equality and women’s empowerment
– Sexual and reproductive health and rights
– Population data and statistics

The meeting will also provide an opportunity for the BRICS countries to share their experiences and best practices on population matters, as well as to explore possibilities for future collaboration and partnership.

Ethiopia’s participation in this meeting reflects its commitment to engage with other developing countries on issues of common interest and to contribute to the global dialogue on population and development. Ethiopia has a large and young population, which presents both challenges and opportunities for its social and economic development. Ethiopia has made significant progress in reducing poverty, improving health and education outcomes, and promoting gender equality. However, it still faces some challenges such as high population growth rate, low contraceptive prevalence rate, high maternal mortality rate, and high youth unemployment rate.

Ethiopia hopes to learn from the experiences of the BRICS countries, as well as to share its own achievements and challenges on population matters. Ethiopia also hopes to strengthen its relations with the BRICS countries and to explore potential areas of cooperation and partnership. Ethiopia believes that by working together with other developing countries, it can achieve its vision of becoming a middle-income country by 2025.
